I’ve recently got in contact with a new and upcoming artist Chasyn, who is ready to let his unique electronic pop sound rock your summer. I spoke with him about his music, getting into broader topics like inspiration, but also talking about the detailed process of producing your own music and creating new sounds never heard before. It was a pleasure getting to know more about him as an artist, and I hope you guys can relate.
Describe your music without using typical genres terms.
“My music mixes instruments, vocals, and a live band atmosphere and pairs them together with the larger than life, synth-driven, DJ aspect of electronic music. My music takes an electronic spin on a broad range of genres. I want someone to be able to be able to experience my catalog of music and jump and cry in the same experience.”
Give us a brief view of your music timeline that you listened to when growing up.
“I remember coming home in 3rd grade crying and my mom then asked me what was wrong. At first I wouldn’t talk but then I yelled “mom I don’t know who the black eyed peas are.” Earlier that day we were listening to different popular songs in music class and I didn’t know a single one. Growing up I listened to strictly 70’s and 80’s from cassette tapes in my moms 1999. I am honestly so glad I was raised on 80’s rock and roll because it engrained a liking for huge sounds and great melodies for me. It’s ironic that I make electronic music now.”
What instrument do you usually start ur songwriting on?
“This really depends for me. If I’m in a purely songwriting mood then I’ll grab my guitar and start writing. Other times I am in the studio (my basement or Belmont dorm room) with my laptop and I will have an idea in my head that I try to lay down in logic. It’s interesting, sometime I have a track before I start writing to it and other times I have the entire song finished before I start the track for it.”
Are you planning on playing any live shows after the quarantine?
“Yes I would love to! Depending on how the summer goes (with social distancing)… I would love to throw a hometown show before I head back to Nashville in the fall. I still haven’t payed a Chasyn set in Nashville so I would to start playing all of the new songs that come out this summer!”
At the big drop at the end of Tennessee, what is that pitch shifting silky synth you’re using?
“The drop at the end of Tennessee has a lot of layers. The synths are mostly coming from Serum. I am using a couple detuned saw waves and then made 80’s type retro synth. Then there is a sub bass and a top bass that gets a lot of its body from the plugin sausage fattener. I then am using little alter boy to format those octave down vocals and side chaining everything to the kick.”
What’s your best advice for other aspiring artists?
Just a couple months ago someone in the industry told me something that I will never forget. He said that everyone tends to sit on what they make. They have a song and wait to release it to wait for the “right time” or for some big label to pick it up. He said that most of the time people end up not even putting that song out because they wait too long and they are already working on their next thing. So basically, if you believe in a song you are making… just put it out! Of course make sure its ready for release and that takes time but put out stuff and see what works and see what doesn’t. When things start working take that direction!
So there you have it! Go stream Chasyn’s new song WYTYNM with Miles Monaco anywhere you listen to music!
